Numerous reports confirm the American criminal court system works differently for people who can afford a good criminal defense, as opposed to those who cannot. The cost of legal representation is one of the most common concerns we hear when meeting people facing serious and life-changing criminal charges. Unfortunately there isn’t a simple answer to this question. However, there are certain things you should know when investing in your legal defense.
Do you charge by the hour?
No. The Awad Legal Team develops a flat fee to cover all of your representation. This fee is determined after your consultation. It will take into consideration what needs to be done in your case to achieve the best possible result. Accordingly, we consider the amount of time your case will remain on a judge’s calendar and what we need to do to achieve the goals you consider most important.
We do not charge an hourly fee. Therefore your fee will not increase based on the amount of work necessary to protect your rights. We will work countless hours including weekends. Whatever it takes to get the best result possible will be covered by our flat fee.
How will I know how much money I need?
We don’t have cookie-cutter fees or a menu of prices for our services. The Awad Legal Team takes time to get to know our clients personally and professionally. Our flat fee takes into consideration the complexity of your case, the severity of the charges, the timeline for a resolution, and each individual’s specific facts.
Is my retainer fee refundable?
Part of our legal services fee is due before representation begins, and a later fee is due before the beginning of trial. If we resolve your case ahead of schedule and without a trial, you will not need to pay the entire amount.
Should I pay for an attorney if I qualify for a Public Defender?
A significant number public defenders are some of the best criminal defense attorneys in the State. This is important to consider especially because of the overwhelming negative perception of Public Defenders in our society. In certain Georgia counties, there is no public defender’s office. Instead, private attorneys are paid by the county to represent people who are indigent.
However, you should hold your attorney to the same standard whether they are appointed or retained. Never go to court with an attorney that is not on your side. Likewise, it is a good idea to speak with multiple attorneys before deciding who you want fighting for you in court.
Does an Attorney with more experience cost more?
Sometimes, but experience is absolutely important. Muneer Awad has represented over 500 individuals who found themselves trapped in the criminal court system. Mr. Awad has also prepared for and fought in numerous jury trials. His most serious cases include Not Guilty Verdicts on murder, rape, and child molestation charges. Mr. Awad has also fought for countless dismissals and reductions of charges for clients facing serious punishments. Those cases included murder, child molestation, armed robbery, possession with intent to distribute, and DUI charges. An honest attorney can tell you whether or not they have the specific experience needed to handle your case.
Will I save money by representing myself?
Not always. An honest attorney can tell you whether or not you need an attorney at all. That is one of the things the Awad Legal Team discusses during your consultation. However, if you are considering pleading guilty to a crime without an attorney, you may be unaware of the costs associated with your guilty plea. These costs can include fines and probation fees. An attorney can help you avoid life-changing consequences of a guilty plea such as a criminal record, license suspensions, or even deportation. Even people who think they are guilty don’t realize there are options that will help them avoid court fines, probation fees, and a permanent criminal record.
